Lamp April 7, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this lamp after having the exact same one for years. I could not find another one in retail stores as bright or funtional as this one. My only concern is that the previous one had begun to smell and get hot at the base causing a concern for a fire. I will not recommend leaving it on unattended.
Happy with the Lamp October 3, 2007 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I'm happy with this lamp purchase.
The lamp is of good quality and well balanced. The base takes up a small area on my desk, which I like. There are two settings for brightness which is also a valuable feature. My only caution would be that this lamp does not provide broad light for the room. It is great to light the desk area.
Perfect for most situations February 24, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I didn't buy this through amazon - I bought 2 lamps through staples back around 2001 - 2002 - so i've been using the two lamps for over 5 years. I have moved twice since owning them. I have found them to be of extremely strong construction. I had to replace the bulb on one of them just today. (both have seen considerable use). One of them (used slightly more) is having issues with the on/off switch but it still works enough not to throw away (and with a little work could probably be easily fixed.) Finally - the only down point is the design. I've never had any issues with it because I use it on flat open surfaces... but if you have the light in a corner or against a wall the up/down maneuvering becomes a little less effective (you have to pull the base away from the wall). Overall one of the best lamps i've ever purchased. I would replace them with same model if they broke and would recommend them to friends (and enemies - might work as a peace offering) - Watch out - it can get extremely hot as it is a halogen bulb (takes Single Ended Quartz T4 style 50w halogen 2 prong bulb)
Bright Light Big Impact May 16, 2008 As a Halogen light the unit is unquestionably bright. That is one of the big positives of Halogen bulbs. What impressed me most was the counterbalance design of the device. The lever and gears that allow for the easy and smooth lowering and raising of the lamp is ingenious and I would love to know the history of the design of this piece.
Pros: -Great Design! -Very bright light like all Halogens. -Very clean white light. -No flicker. -Smooth movement of lamp arm. -Long lasting bulb. -Light device.
Negatives: -Expensive replacement bulbs. -The bulb runs extremely hot (Halogen normal). -No change in brightness. (No high or low setting).
Solid unit were the biggest plus isn't the function but rather the incredibly efficient design.
Good Value! December 20, 2008 I received one of these lamps for Christmas about eight years ago and it's still going strong. While the list price says $140, it's always on sale for around $50. They price it like this to compete with the $150 lamps. I don't know what people expect regarding quality when they buy a $50 lamp that competes with $150 lamps. I'm a college student and it gets a fair amount of abuse. My lamp has the same plastic gears and occasionally the moving parts get loose, but I just pull out the screwdriver and fix it. I've always had it plugged into a surge protector, so it hasn't fried. It's true, the lamp is not the most high quality, but it's still a great value.
